Running on...

Photobucket

This is a profile of the Whiskey Row Marathon course. It's written up as "one of the toughest marathon courses in the country".
I ran it in 1982.

It takes place in the Prescott National Forest and what I love about the race is that it's run on forest service roads for almost all of it.

I found these photos on line that someone took during the 2007 race. Looks as if they had a perfect day.

It's an out and back course and tops out at 7200 feet. I was first place woman at the turn around point and was passed by two ladies in the last mile because I had to stop and rub out a leg cramp.

So I ended up third woman overall. (4:04) Would love to find some archived results, but am unable to. I am now interested in how many people ran the race that year. They have added a half-marathon and a 10K to get more people to participate. I don't think they have had 200 ever sign up at one time for the full marathon.

"People conceptualize conditioning in different ways, " he said. "Some think it is a ladder straight up. Others see plateaus, blockages, ceilings. I see it as a geometric spiraling upwards, with each spin of the circle taking you a different distance upwards. Some spins may even take you downwards, just gathering momentum for the next upswing. Sometimes you will work your fanny off and see very little gain; other times you will amaze yourself and not really know why. Training is training, it all seems to blend together after awhile. What is going on inside is just a big puzzle."- Bruce Denton in Once a Runner

It pretty much all came together for me on that day.
Keep running.

Holy cats, that looks scary! I'm assuming that's you in the picture. Nice.

Whew, that is certainly a very tough course! Sorta like Pikes peak without the really high altitude.

I've recently read a couple posts about aging and speed. I know you're a longtime runner too. Just out of curiosity, are you still either setting or seeking running PRs?
